    Sabikis ...

I spent $60 on the Ahi Sabiki Stick, a hollow fishing pole with no eyes that allows you to save a Sabiki rig indefinitely. So far, I have caught two fish on it and taken it on two trips. It works well if you fish often and regularly use Sabiki rigs, but it is difficult to rig up or to catch...

    Regulation changes.

I am curious to see how the removal of size limits for California Scorpionfish will play out this year. I am anticipating a sudden surge of sculpin being caught by party boats, and that number will gradually decrease as time goes on until the limits are reinstated. I'm not sure if that was a...

Seal Beach Pier 12/16 - Poaching Alert!

I took a brief walk down Seal Beach Pier today to see what was going on. I have not been able to visit this pier since September. I arrived at the pier at about 12:50 PM to an outgoing tide. The water was very clear, and very few swimmers were in it. On the south side of the pier, just past the...

I did not realize that. I'm sorry for the misidentification.

    Seal Beach Pier 9/11

Hi everyone. I was able to visit Seal Beach Pier for a nice evening yesterday. While I arrived at the pier later than I would have liked, it still ended up being a fun day on the water. I arrived at the pier at about 6:45 PM to a high, outgoing tide. Although I had mussels, I decided to head...

Walk on Huntington Beach Pier 9/2

While I haven't been able to go pier fishing much recently, I did have the opportunity to explore the Huntington Beach Pier while running some errands at Main Street Huntington Beach. I arrived at the pier at about 4:45 PM to a low, but rising tide. About a dozen anglers were fishing from the...

    Avalon Skiff Trip 8/26

I didn't have time to post this earlier, but I was at Avalon for a skiff fishing trip this past Monday and was able to check out both the Cabrillo Mole and the Green Pleasure Pier. Nobody was fishing at either pier. I arrived at the Green Pleasure Pier at about 7:30 AM at a low tide. I was...

    Huntington Beach Pier 08/31

Nice trip. I didn't know Brown Smoothound sharks lived this far south. I was at Huntington Pier yesterday, and didn't see much other than smelt and sardines, but I did see a baby Bat Ray in the surf. I'll post a more detailed report later.

    Fish ID?

After reviewing your articles, and conducting further research, I believe that the fish is most likely a Sharpnose Seaperch, although I have not seen any mention of one from Catalina and the coloring seems to be darker than most photos I've seen. Are there any other species of surfperch that are...

    Fish ID?

It was about 10-12". I wasn't able to get a measurement, but it was fairly large for a perch. Do White Seaperch have any regional or spawning colors, like the Buttermouth Perch? I'm wondering if that might be the case, since it has the shape, but not the color.

    Fish ID?

We were in about 25-30 feet, easily within swimming distance of the shore but not quite in the surf. The fish was caught on cut squid.

    Fish ID?

Hi everyone, I caught this surfperch on the Native Sun on a 3/4 Day trip to Catalina at a cove called Moonlight Beach. Is this a Pile Perch or a Rubberlip Surfperch? I have seen photos of this fish labeled "Rubberlip" and "Pile Perch", and am unsure of which is correct. Is darker color a mating...

    Fish counts...

Based on some of my personal experiences with party boats, it seems like part of the reason counts are low is because the crews of the boats choose to spend the entire trip targeting "trophy" fish, such as Yellowtail, Bluefin Tuna, and White Sea Bass instead of "sack fillers", like Rockfish...

    No one's fishing?

I was on the Native Sun on Friday, but I didn't think anyone would be interested in reading a report, since I didn't go pier or shore fishing.

Cultural Differences On CA Piers And Attitudes Towards Fish.

From reviewing the regulations, since Thornback Rays are not specifically mentioned, the daily bag limit is 10 per person. I have kept Thornbacks before (although I wouldn't recommend it due to the amount of work required to clean the fish and the minimal meat it produces), and I've seen other...

The cost of Bay Area Sportfishing boats...

Maybe it's because of capacity. From checking today's fish count, most Bay Area boats went out with less than 20 anglers, while most SoCal boats (excluding the 6-pack charters) went out with 20-30 anglers, and even the boats with less than 20 anglers still have the capacity to carry a far...

Barred Surf Perch being sold in Supermarket - 3/29

I was at the Shun Fat Westminster Superstore Thuận Phát today and saw what appeared to be Barred Surf Perch and Spotted Bay Bass being sold. The fish looked frozen for a long time and were labeled "Product of China". Is it legal for a store to be selling these fish? I have never heard of a...

    Catching fish with strawberries...

I have seen a large Jack Mackerel that was roughly 1.5 ft caught at San Clemente Island a couple of years ago, larger than any I have seen from a pier. Maybe it was the isolated location that produced such a large fish?
