Fished the high tide this morning. Overall bite was slow. Managed to catch a variety of small fish. All released. Caught 2 Black Perch, 1 Cabezon, 1 Catalina Blue aka Half-moon, 1 Calico Bass and a Roundray.

All fish caught on high/low rig baited with muscle or shrimp. Roundray went after a whole frozen anchovy on a fish finder setup.

A fisherwoman near me caught a 14 inch Sheephead on shrimp. Another fisherman caught a 17 inch Calico Bass on shrimp.

A large gray whale swam parallel with the pier and was about 15 feet from the pier. It actually swam below my fishing lines! Incredible surprise and joy to see and hear this large marine mammal.

Good luck fishing everyone.

Was there any bait in the water? I have the net and oxygen bubbler ready.

Sabikis work well.

Here is the regulation:

28.80. Dip Nets and Hawaiian Type Throw Nets. Dip nets of any size and baited hoop nets not greater than 36 inches in diameter may be used to take herring, Pacific staghorn sculpin, shiner surfperch, surf smelt, topsmelt, anchovies, shrimp and squid. Hawaiian type throw nets may be used north of Point Conception to take such species.
I just noticed the wording on this... Are cast-nets specifically banned south of Point Conception, or are they specifically allowed north of Point Conception as an exception?

Drop nets, sometimes called pier nets or bridge nets, are legal south of Point Conception and many people do use them to catch their anchovies and small smelt. Personally I wish all nets were ruled illegal but those nets are currently legal.

If I recall correctly:

The square nets with a very fine mesh are allowed for bait fishing only. Some breadcrumbs would be helpful. Even when using Sabiki. Ask Snookie.

Cast nets are not allowed south of Point Conception, but as many as hooks you can handle are allowed.

North of Point Conception the cast nets are allowed, but only three hooks on Sabiki in the Bay area.
