Throwing out stuff due to an upcoming move and found this old note.
Wylie’s Perch Rig. Wylie’s Bait and Tackle in Malibu has long been my favorite bait shop. I first visited it back in the ‘90s and have been going back ever since. At one time Bob Wylie ran the business with the assistance of Ginny Wylie while today Ginny is the dynamic lady who is there every day answering questions and helping out the anglers. Bob was an expert of fishing for the large barred surfperch and it was him I turned to when a friend needed a sand crab net (sand crabs being the best bait for barred surfperch). He knew all the local experts and was headquarters for most of the perch derbies as well as the commercial guys who fished for the perch. In his shop, on the wall, hangs the California record barred surfperch.
He once described a leader that it probably the easiest and fastest leader to tie. It was developed by the commercial guys who often fished at night. They would sometimes snag their leaders on a rock or kelp, and needed to quickly tie a new leader in the dark. It was developed for surf fishing but will also works on a pier.
He said to simply make a loop about two feet long at the end of a fishing line and tie a single overhand knot. Cut the loop open about six inches from the knot. This short end is tied to the sinker. The long end of the line is tied to your hook. Hook, sinker and line, nothing else. You don’t need to use any hardware and that simple know should hold almost any fish you will catch while fishing for the perch. Typically when fishing in the surf you will use 2-, 4-, or 6-ounce pyramid sinkers depending upon the waves and current and a size.
