Wednesday did not go as planned and I was unable to fish. However, I was able to make it to Ventura and stopped to in see to Ludia at Hyun’s Tackle, 3695 E Harbor Blvd., Ventura. She's a reporter for the site and I said hi while picking up some extra bait and sinkers.
I was able to fish the Port Hueneme Pier and Stearns Wharf Thursday but with with equally bad results.
In the morning I fished Port Huneme for two hours with dismal results, just two speckled sanddab and a crab. I can't complain though, there were about six other anglers and they didn't catch a fish. A lady was at the end with her dog, son and his friend. She said: there were smelt here yesterday. He said: I guess they moved on. Me: Yep. Various baits and various spots on the pier with only the sanddab.
I next headed to Santa Barbara where I met up with Ben at Hook Line & Sinker at 2259 Las Positas Road, Santa Barbara who is also a reporter for the site. He was busy stocking the shelves at his brand new location. I finally headed over to Stearns Wharf. There I spent some time talking to Mike at the Stearns Wharf Bait shop. He said there were mackerel, both Pacific and Spanish (jack mackerel) recently but the bite completely turned off when they had some really big winds a few days ago. Said everything stopped. Plus he said there are so many crabs you have to cast out 40-50 feet from the wharf not to have a crab attack your bait. Unfortunately, I found that to be true. Not a single fish bite but constant hits and a few hookups from the crabs. The other bad news is that they are working on pilings at the end and he theorized the constant loud pounding may have driven fish away. He may be right. Bottom line, not the time to visit Stearns.
The night saw me taking my granddaughter (who is a UCSB student) out to dinner. Friday morning would see a visit to the Goleta Pier and hopefully things would improve.
