Socrates preached temperance: moderation in action, thought, and feeling. Addiction to alcohol, drugs, and many other activities including perhaps fishing and buying fishing tackle would probably be included.

As a recovering ALCOHOLIC.........I can relate........Yet I am presently bidding on 3 Abu Rocket Reels and have an Amazon shopping cart that is OBSCENE.

Other than perhaps the cost, addiction to fishing or fishing tackle rarely leads to the problems cased by most other addictions. However, I remember the wealthy old lady who used to visit my shoe store in Stockton. She had a maid who told me one day that the lady had thousands of shoes. I asked her what the lady's husband thought about her addiction to shoes and she said it didn't matter, the lady got rid of her husband and kept the shoes.

Join the club.
I went from freshwater fishing, to fly fishing, to pier fishing (sinker casting), to saltwater fly fishing, to cattle boat fishing, to lobster hooping, to kayak fishing, to ice ("hardwater") fishing. Add scuba to the list too, but no spear gun in US. Snorkeling and spear fishing in Istanbul, before US.

I was walking the isles of Bass Pro Shops with nothing I needed, until I got to Kayak fishing. For ice fishing it was mostly Ebay.

Sometimes I wonder if I am too much in the buying business, then I see my wife's shoe collection among other items.

If you do not mind the shoe collections then everybody's happy. If, however, you object to the shoe collections then it would seem only fair that they might objectt to the collection of fishing equipment and then everyone might not be so happy.

Perhaps a solution is to make an agreement at the start of each year that each person can buy X dollars of shoes or fishing equipment. Once the amount is agreed upon then neither person should be upset with the purchases of the other — unless they exceed the agreed upon amounts.

I had an even better idea...and bought my wife a license and a new fishing pole & reel for her bday last week :)
I can already see the future conversations, “hey baby, check it out, I just bought you a new Shimano Calcutta reel. Surprise! Oh, can I borrow your new reel on Saturday?” :)

Well if nothing else, my wife and I (or is it me?) are helping the economy! From the designer to the manufacturer and delivery guy, lots of people earn money, so I can have my gear. Better than money in the mattress.

I look at the gear as tools. I still can find a use for older gear too. So I have old and new gear. You can catch me with an old Truline or Sabre and a new Lamiglas, with mixed old and new reels. Depends what I'm fishing for.

I fish. Both my brothers fish. My nephew fishes. My friends fish. So they sometimes they send me fishing deals to blow money on. First I'm like, "Man!" but temtation's a motha.
