Subject: Storing all your stuff?

I have a dilemma, I am a tackle ho in training but the stuff I have is all over the place. How do you guys organize it all? I need some kind of mini store at home for all the hooks and weights and lures and reels and line and rods and oh man the list goes on and on!!!

I am in the same boat in terms of rods, they are all over the place. For the other tackle, I have a couple nice big tackle boxes that I keep everything in that never leaves my closet. When I go out, I grab what I need and put it in my fanny pack for the days use only. If you find a solution for the rods hanging all over the place, let me know man! monte

The rod thing is fairly simple, just buy one of those Berkley rod racks, they are available at almost all chain sporting goods stores that carry fishing gear and are only around $10. They hold six rods and screw right into the wall, just take the reels off, they look a lot better that way and the reels won't bang together. Adam, Will work for fish!

I have a tackle box at home. But when I go fishing, I use a fanny pack. I put all the necessary stuff in my fanny pack like a knife, extra roll of line, and a small container for hooks. I also use a film bottle to store some hooks and weights. As for poles, I only have two and I just stand them up in the corner of my garage.

Don't forget the pliers!

This is for the reels. I keep all my fishing tackle and poles in a closet. It's out of the way, its convenient, and is in a nice place where it is dark and never gets warm. I keep my reels in drawers in a dresser. I have like five tackle boxes that I keep on the floor in the closet. I've got some stuff in the corners that I prop my rods up against so that the tip and/or upper rod area doesn't bend. You could also build a couple rod racks so the rods don't lean against the wall and bend.

Costco Gorilla Racks and Bike Hooks. I have 5 sets of those Costco gorilla racks (home depot has 'em too) in my garage. Great for shelving for all those boxes of mail order tackle. I keep reels in their original boxes if new and on the shelf, or if old, I use a Sterlite small or medium plastic box to hold them. Then along the rafters of my low hanging garage, I have bike hooks. The rafters are 6 feet apart, so I store my surf and fly rods up on the hooks. The shorter rods go into those Berkeley wall mount racks. But I love the bike hooks for long rods. The plastic coating protects the finish, and a single pair of hooks hold 3 rods with out reels. the only thing is to check and make sure that the surf rod aren't in the way of the garage door when it opens or closes, otherwise, you could lose some good rods. - Gyozadude, "Yes - I can roll my own potsticker skins"

Here is the deal. I have 15 rods and I am making more, I also have 4 assorted tackle boxes that are full and I just placed 2 orders for about 12 packs of Grubs...I need a THA (Tackle Ho's Anonymous) I was looking for a piece of furniture that would accommodate all this STUFF. But it looks like I might have to build something, because I want it inside the apartment and so that people can see some of the rods I have made without having to go down to the garage. Thanks for all the advice! Adam, Will work for fish!

Buy a house, Baitfish... Adam: You may need a house, custom designed for tackle hoes. That could be the first step before thinking about furniture.- Gyozadude

I actually do have a garage, but when I'm lazy it might as well be marathon away. Funny, I will walk easily 2-3 miles to catch fish, but when it comes down to going downstairs to the garage, that couch looks mighty comfortable. House is the next big investment though, I wonder if Plano has a contract with Home Depot....hmmmmm the first house designed completely for the Angler... no honey, that is not a shower, that is a tackle desalinization station! Don't clean out your boat while your wife is home. I made this mistake and when she saw all the fishing poles she about flipped. She doesn't mind me fishing and sometimes will join me but doesn't understand why I would need more than 2 or 3 poles max. Oh well I was forgiven and even allowed to buy a new reel that day – What a a lady !!!! "Get Bent" "Sinker"

"those are my buddies' poles..." Just tell her that one. It may work... maybe. - Gyozadude

Guys, is she right? Seriously now, don't get me wrong, I've had over 7 rods for years. But do we really need that many? Think of the cash - instead of 20 "cool" rods, we could afford 5 "really cool" ones. Hmmm, just seems that there's only about 5 or 6 general uses for fishing poles and the need to have different ones. What do you think?

To be outfitted properly...The "compleat" angler needs to have the following rods:
1 ultralight fw 5'6" or shorter 2 -6 lb test spinning
1 light fw 6' or longer 4 - 10 lb test spinning
1 med fw 6'6" or longer 6 - 12 lb lest spinning
1 med hvy fw 6'6" or longer 8 - 17 lb test spinning
1 med fw 6' casting med fast action
1 med-hvy fw 6'6" or longer fast action casting
1 hvy fw 7' fast action casting
1 xhvy fw 7'6" mde-fast muskie rod casting
1 fly rod 4-5 wt 8ft
1 fly rod 6-7 wt 8'6"
1 fly rod 8 wt 9ft
1 fly rod 10 - 11wt 9'6"
1 surf rod 10 ft 1 - 4 oz spin
1 surf rod 10 ft 1 - 4 oz cast
1 surf rod 11 ft 3 - 8 oz cast
1 pier rod 9ft 2 - 6 oz spin
1 pier rod 9ft 2 - 6 oz cast
2 boat rods 7 ft cast
1 9ft steelhead cast
1 9ft steelhead spin
1 10 ft salmon cast
1 10 ft salmon spin

That's easily 20 rods right there. and you need backup rods if any of them break. Gyozadude

Hmm, but what if I go ice fishing in Antarctica? And what if I wanna fish Marlin off the rocks in New Zealand. I mean, I don't wanna be caught short-handed of course, hehe.

Man... I forgot about ice fishing...Dudes... ice fishing is hot... gotta add at least another 2 or 3 minimum ultralight 36" poles...Plus you have to have some for kids to fish with too, right? Add 4 or 5 more poles.... we're looking at 40 poles to be "Compleat". - Gyozadude, "Yes - I can roll my own potsticker skins"

Absolutely!!! Seriously though, the reason I have so many rods is that they are all specialized for different types of fishing. Everything from Ultra Light to a 30# tuna stick. Some rods will work in a situation, but another will work better. Now I need 60# and 80# 2 speed outfits for Mexico.

Proper outfitting—hey, Gyoze. Let's say I wanted to be "properly outfitted." How much would you charge to wrap and finish all those rods? (I am JUST curious. At the rate I'm going, I figure I'm not going to be "properly outfitted" for about 20 years!)

Posted by baitfish

LOL!!! If I was properly outfitted like Gyoza says, I would need public storage, not furniture:) Then again Mola Joe has said he has had more than 200 rods at one point. There are tackle Hoe's and then there are Tackle Pimps! (sorry for the "P" word Lucy) Adam, Will work for fish!

I'm lucky. My wife has given me one of the bedrooms in our house to turn into my own fishing room. Still won't matter though, because there will still be fishing outfits left in the shower after cleaning, tackle in the kitchen sink, tackle lying all around the house, fishing catalogues on top of tables, tackle in the garage, etc. etc. And then there's me sitting at the computer looking thru ebay for more tackle and searching other sites for fishing info. Luckily she fishes with me and doesn't get on me too much about, "Do you really need that/those?". When she does get on me I just throw it back at her that I'd only have half the stuff if she didn't fish too. Afterall, I have to buy her outfits and stuff too. I'll admit it now, I'll NEVER, have enough tackle!!! Tight lines all.

Pimping rates...Okay... to be a tackle pimp vs. a tackle ho... To answer Lucy's question about how much to be outfitted, I'd have to estimate my opportunity costs... Currently, when I go out on a priority one technical call, my department can bill between $800—$3,000/hr. Building 30 rods will take about 20 days labor x 8 hours per day = 160 hours. I can give you a discount and charge just $500/hr and that should run only $80,000, which is only $2,700 per rod. You'd probably do better going with Leapin' Bass or Mola Joe. They probably charge less. In actuality, I've never charged labor for a rod. It's only been materials cost. I do this as a hobby. It's relaxing and fun.
