I said I was going to get back out there and so I did.

Got to the jetty by 6:20 ish, and walked down to just behind the end section. I started off throwing a 15 g jigpara and caught a couple mackerel. After no bites for a while, I switched to a splasher, and immediately pulled the hook on a bonito. I ended up losing both splashers that I had brought, and also had chipped a guide in one of my rods. At 9, I caught one bone on the jig. I fell and cracked my right knee and elbow while landing that fish. I borrowed someone else's splasher and caught one more bonito before they left at 10. As people left, the end opened up, and I moved over there. I continued to cast the jig, and popped off at least half a dozen fish, often right next to the rocks. I again borrowed someone's splasher and caught one more at 11, before it slowed substantially for me. The people at the very end continued to catch consistently on the splasher. When they left at 12:30, I moved in and quickly filled out my limit with the jig, and went home. The average length was 14"-15", with one standout 17" fish.

Yikes! I think I'll stick with the piers  Great job hangin' in there. Thurs was tough with the early wind on Balboa (7am), still lots of bonito but just breezing through the smelt, rarely hitting artificials or live bait, but I heard today was a good bite on Newport!

Man that's uber. I never thought anyone fished on that jetty. So you went clear out to the tip? How deep do you think the water is there? Great report.

PS I have flyfishing boots I wear for rock hopping. I highly recommend for safety's sake.

Thanks for the report. Nice fishing there.

"I fell and cracked my right knee and elbow while landing that fish." I borrowed someone else's splasher and caught one more bonito before they left at 10. As people left, the end opened up, and I moved over there.
Am I to understand, that you fished with broken knee and elbow??? I must be wrong.

Anyhow, I hope you are ok.

My best fishing with lure at a jetty was in 1967 in Istanbul. I happen to be at the jetty when the blue fish were running. What a blast.

One recommendation for fishing from a jetty, especially if you are situated so that there are boulders behind you; is to use “launcher” and feather instead of water filled plastic eggs.

Plastic egg hitting the boulders can crack, but not the Launchers.

During last private boat trip to Catalina, I landed some bonito, before the sea lion took it with the fish.

Not sure about the exact depth but at least as deep as the water off Balboa Pier.

Thanks for the concern, I heard a crack when I hit the rock, but otherwise I think my elbow is mostly fine other than some scrapes. My knee on the other hand is still sore and stiff, and doesn’t feel ‘right’. Hopefully it’s just a sprain.

Don't wait too long before seeing a doctor. My grandmother hid from my mom her fall and knee damage. Later she had too much problem with it. Serious problem.
