I went down to Balboa pier in hopes of some Bonito action. Got there around 2pm, left around 7:30pm. Heard there was some small Bonito biting in the early morning.
Lots of bait crashing, huddled around the pilings, it would “rain” smelt every few mins. I tried live smelt, sardine krocodile, splash feather, no bites, although they would chase the krocodile all the way to the surface, i failed to land any. All the live smelt i put out were taken by mackerels. Towards sunset I see a smallish bonie fly out of the water slamming my bait, i felt the tug, then nothing.
At 7pm on the dot, all of a sudden the mack attack was on with a fury! Large ones at first then a huge school of dinky ones. I landed a couple dozen, gave em to the guys who wanted them.
I think within a few days the Bonito will be biting hard and not afraid to chade and bite everything.

I was there on Sunday also. A friend in the middle tee caught a nice sized bonito on a small smelt with a slider. that was it though. Saw breaks into the surf later in the day. They were bonito as we saw them quite well. They are taking their time to respond to our attempts to catch them. Seems like the early morning is the best time.
