Some Newer Nostalgia

Just trying to keep interest up. Given the limited amount of current reports not too many are being pushed down. As reports go up the old articles will go down.

Just wondering, are people not posting reports anymore for fear of spot burning or basically don't want to give up any information these days? I've been on this board probably since 2010 but had to re-register and I remember more reports and/info when I first started fishing. Now theres barely any reports. How was the message board with reports before?

I noticed people these days post pictures on social media just to show off their catches but will always omit the locations/area. I call them Instagram fisherman. Same pic/pose with the same species of fish over and over again. The shore anglers mostly. I don't get to fish too much due to my schedule so I kind of live vicariously through those pictures.

There is a little issue called Covid-19.

People are asked to stay home.

Piers are closed, parking lots are closed.

Myself, I gave up on local piers due to many issues even if they are open.

Lately I have saved my trips for out of state, long trips. You may have noticed my ice fishing trips with soooooo many pictures.

On a side note:
July 20th-25th I will be in a small town in Alaska for boat and river fishing. Report to follow.

One issue that is currently putting a damper on my mood lately is the Covid-19 testing required by the state of Alaska.
They asking for a negative test (3) days before entering the state. In my case, I have to test on Friday, for the Monday flight.
Not sure labs are open on weekend, and even if they are, all estimates are for 5-7 days.

The board was dead before the little issue of Covid-19 as we can all see. I remember it being more active about 10 years ago when I first came across this website. Have fun on your trips and catch lots of fish.

Part of the problem is simply a change in technology with many glued to YouTube videos and other sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TickToc, etc. Part is simply the current lack of fishing, especially in places like L.A. Part is that people's attitudes have changed (in many ways). You rarely see the same friendliness, interest, or sharing of information that we once saw. Given that the initial goal for the site was the sharing of information (not just spots but knowledge and technique) to help one another, perhaps it's outlived its usefullness?

As for the older articles, I'm picking out ones that may be of interest for those unable to be out on the water. Not too different than reading magazine articles —or is that too outdated?

Well, about 10 years ago, the Berkeley Pier was still open and posting a report would not have mattered because there was always a spot to fish on that pier. With that pier gone and the decrease in fishing spots in general, posting a fishing report will likely get 20 people fishing at your spot the next day. Who wants that? By the way, I heard Fort Point was on fire. I personally saw a 36" hali come up the day after July 4th on a swimbait. I was only there to measure the railings for a rodholder.
Thats a great observation. The SF Bay Area isn't huge and all the spots are pretty well known and if a few people hear that there are fish to be had at a certain place, you're right..it will be packed the next day. When I fish, I go to all the known spots, the Yacht club, Crissy Field, Oyster Point, Candlestick. They don't always produce though.

I believe that is accurate. All those resources are out there and a message board would be "boring" to most people, especially the younger crowd. I'm getting up there in age and using both websites and social media work well for resources or entertainment.

Lots of folks on Fishbrain now which does default to pin drop on a map for catch location. I have found it very helpful but none of these are great information substitutes for a well-written forum report.

Fishbrain is pure garbage. It’s the vanity of social media coupled with geotag spot burning. The worst of both worlds no doubt compiled into an app. But hey, if you have no clue or desire to learn and educate yourself of the “how” and “why” rather than just “what” and “where” then that’s right up your alley.

Classic. Only thing missing from this post was a request for Ken to bring back the old archives.
