Snookie, chum and scum

August is always the most interesting time at the pier. The fishing and the people are sometimes quite unbelievable. Yesterday we had halibut although not too many. The mackerel fishermen were extremely happy with their results. The snaggers in the surf caught a very large shovelnose guitarfish and a smoothound shark equally as big. They also had some mullet of decent sizes. A man fishing for mackerel caught a halfmoon that weighed about a pound. The bait situation was good. We had all sizes of smelt, small mackerel, and sardines. Unfortunately the water was big from the Mexican storm so there was enough surge to bring in the loose chunks of mussels. Those are awful to untangle. At least they weren't too heavy to lift.
The pier had a good crowd about midday on. There was a bride and groom plus their wedding party in all their finery having their picture taken in the middle of the pier in amongst the fishermen. The wind was blowing and the bride found out why the women in the old days used sinkers to hold their dresses down in the wind.
A UPS truck had an accident with the trash bins up by Ruby's when he tried to take off too fast. They managed to replace the door he ripped off.
The weather was very cool and windy all day, but that didn't stop the people from coming.
Early upon arriving my group had a trio of teens (boys) that probably were on something unfortunately and took offense at our presence. They tried to turn over our big bait bucket full of bait just for fun plus they threatened us. Needless to say they were unsuccessful and met with the wrath of the three of us who use cell phones and will call the police to solve problems on the pier.
Just a reminder to be cautious. This time of the year people are trying to get their last minute “fun” in and are not your normal types to visit the pier. After Labor Day all will turn back to normal and we can enjoy it again. Snookie

Sorry to hear about your run in with a couple of punks. I hate when people think it is cool to mess with other people’s stuff. They are lucky I was not there. There would have been a couple of splashes and some very unhappy punks. -Boomer

I'd have your back, bud. You know I'd be on TOP of THAT! Quick action - no words.

Stinky you remind me of my best buddy back home in the UK. Wiry build and a complete head case, LOL. The number of times he and I used to get into trouble because he was hot headed and would NEVER back down from anything or anyone! Mind you we normally came through in one piece in the end!

Time and time again, my patience draws thin. Daily things get me enraged. People on the roads, idiots on the phone, and especially when I hear about good 'ol folks getting’ harassed by some punks...It's only a matter of time. If you guys don't see posts from me for over a week - you know something went down. I try and try and try VERY HARD to be cool and level-headed. I try, oh my God do I try. But some things just get me right THERE! Right in that spot where I see red and all else is nothing. Scary, actually. Very scary at times. I need to completely cool off before I have kids - that's my goal. Maybe I need to see an Indian shaman or something, have him take me down to the spirit world to conquer the demon within...
I don't know.

Nah you'll be OK, fishing is a relaxing sport (most of the time). It's all about finding balance in life, not getting walked over, but yet not killing everyone who annoys you. He and I were a good mix, different characters but brought out the best in each other.

Yes, sometimes it gets too interesting. A real shame when a bunch of losers try to ruin it for everyone else. I'm still anticipating my garage getting tagged for a last minute “fun” activity by the local high schoolers. Hurry, School! And may they learn something of value this year...

Scum should be used as chum. Snookie: I am sorry to hear about what happened to you. You are the same age as my mom, and even though she knows how to travel, I can’t help but take concern for her safety in the public from time to time. The (boys) behavior was reprehensible. I hope that this type of behavior is not representing a fast decline in the morality of youth and family values. I agree with Boomer, let ‘em come to Berkeley and try and kick over my bait bucket. Cowards, period.

Bunch of Punk Pansies! But you did the right thing, they will have a lot more time to think when they are sitting on their handcuffed hands in a squad car. Adam

Well, I don’t know about that. I don’t think that matters much anymore because kids don’t care about being arrested. They get arrested and they get a ride home. That’s if they even get arrested. I tell you me and my friends grew up a little harder then normal (not saying we are bad people) and we value a good old a@# whooping. –Boomer

Well, yeah, but what self-respecting fish would be attracted to scum-chum? The crabs might like it, but as we all know, they'll eat ANYthing. Might work on white croakers, but I suspect even they draw the line somewhere.

Hey Snookie, sorry to hear that. I am 16 and I would never do that to a fellow angler. I always fish with my dad and I enjoy fishing with him. Here’s a few things I notice. Some adults usually don't listen to teenagers about anything. Example: Last week at Capitola, my dad and I were slaying Walleye perch on a Sabiki rig baited with anchovy pieces. A few older anglers came by and asked what we were using for bait. We told them anchovy pieces, but on our bait board (to cut bait on) we had a few squid. They thought I was trying to lie to them so they won’t have success. One guy even accused me of lying to him. Very frustrating when I told them the truth, and they think otherwise. Some older adult anglers think that teens and young kids can't fish as well as they can. At a few nearby lakes, some older anglers won't even bother to ask if I caught anything when they are asking everyone else if they caught something. It seems as if they assume I cannot catch any fish because I am younger than everyone else. A couple of times, I caught a few big catfish with bread balls on a number 4 hook. Some anglers asked what I was using and I told them bread, and they scoffed at my idea and accused me of lying to them.
I for one have little faith in today’s youth. The things I see going on at high school are terrible, even to my standards. Example: There was an orientation being held on the bleachers at my school. A kid dropped his backpack and had to go underneath to go fetch it. As soon as he got under the bleachers, the “cool” kids began to spit on him. He grabbed his backpack and came out with a few phrases for them. I am not the type to spit on someone. I currently drive a Honda Prelude and ever since I've gotten it, people have been asking for rides. I've said no to a lot of people. The next few days resulted in a few scratches on my door. I don't know what was the point of all this, it got lost in my frustration for today's youth. I can't believe I am saying this with me being only 16. Anyways, sorry about that Snookie.

Don't feel bad about adults not taking you seriously. I feel that a lot of them are just angry that a kid is out fishing them. This is just pure ignorance!

Thank you fellow fishermen
Thanks guys. I appreciate your comments. I do enjoy the majority of the youths I meet at the pier. They are there to learn about a wonderful sport, and I am ready to help them. These types will be gone next time, and in the future perhaps prison where the lesson to be learned is harder.
