Short trip to the Central Coast.

Headed over to the Central Coast for a few days of fishing. Unfortunately the fishing was less than stellar but it answered a few questions I had.

Day 1 — Wednesday, August 20.

The Avila Pier is still closed.

Headed over to the coast after some morning business so didn’t get there until mid-day. Was going to spend the night in Pismo Beach and wanted to fish the pier at night so headed first to Avila Beach to check out that pier that has been closed for years. Turned out it is still closed except for a small section at the front, which might allow some surf fishing but the tide was low and I moved on down the road to Port San Luis and the Hartford Pier.

Port San Luis Pier

Limited parking is available at the end and I found a spot, ($3 for two hours), got out my tackle, and headed to the end. I shared the pier with about five other anglers and wasn’t too sure what to expect but as usual dropped my high/low baited with lugworms down to the kelp and pilings at the end.

Soon after I had a hit and pulled up two fish, a white seaperch and a rainbow seaperch.

White seaperch and rainbow seaperch.

My hopes were now high but I was only able to pull up two more fish from the piling area, another white seaperch and a small brown rockfish. While that line was soaking I decided to throw out a Sabiki for some jacksmelt, mackerel, or whatever was present. I did catch two good-sized jacksmelt but I soon discovered than if I let the line slow or drop toward the bottom I would be bringing in lizardfish. That answered one of my questions, whether or not lizardfish were in CenCal this year as they are in SoCal. I caught a couple of dozen lizardfish but no more perch or rockfish, the preferred species. I did try live lizardfish for halibut bait but didn’t have a bite.

Port San Luis: 1:10-3:10 p.m.
24 Lizardfish
2 White Seaperch
2 Jacksmelt
1 Rainbow Seaperch
1 Brown Rockfish

I next decided to move over to Pismo Beach.
