Shelter Island report

Went from 5pm to about 730pm. Beautiful day to get out. The pier was packed. Tons of baitfish. I used squid on the top level of water. Caught a decent sized smelt. Fished the bottom with live bloodworms and caught 4 undersized Calico Bass.

A few people using sabiki rigs and consistently catching smelt. Only saw 3 mackerel caught in the sabiki. One regular mentioned the macks run late at night and can be caught using the glow stick.

Thanks for the report! I was wondering about your whereabouts as I have not seen any reports about shelter island.

It's pretty common to have a good mackerel bite right at daybreak, no mackerel during the day, and then a good mackerel bite starting at sundown and running into the night. Newbies who show up during the day don't see any mackerel and assume fishing is poor.

Returned Friday from 12am to about 2am. A good bite on Mackerel using a glowstick and a strip of Squid.
I salted some shrimp and caught a sculpin and 2 Bay Bass.
Saw some Corvina chasing baitfish. The pier is loaded with baitfish.

Went late last night. Only had my small spinning outfit filled with 6 pound test. Had some salted ghost shrimp. Caught my biggest Yellowfin Croaker. Fought like a big Bay Bass. Took a quick Pic and released it. Also caught a small sculpin.
