Seal Beach... Slow

#1
Inspired by some of the recent bonito and other interesting reports, we made it out to Seal Beach Pier this morning, but action was generally slow. Final count for us was 3 salema, one snagged queenfish, plentiful smelt, and one small bonito released to go get bigger. Everything was on sabikis, small one for most of the baitfish and a larger one for some of the smelt and the bonito. Lots of small baitfish in the water in the early morning with a few boils that didn't lead to any hookups. All the bait, cut bait and live smelt, we tossed out on the bottom came back completely untouched. Other anglers caught one other small bonito, a mini sand bass, a small white seabass, and a small butterfly ray on a whole smelt. Unfortunately pretty slow, but a nice day out at the beach nonetheless!

That's surprising given recent reports have been so good. At least you got a chance to go pier fishing and got a few fish. I've been stuck here in Fresno lately.

This summer I've caught and released two Butterfly rays at SB. Both rays caught with live queenfish. Glad to hear they also strike on smelt. When I use live smelt targeting halibut, the sandbass get to them first! That's ok. A Fish On! Is a Fish on!

Thanks for the report.
