A California scorpionfish I caught one day at the Ocean Beach Pier. The fish is most commonly called a sculpin by anglers although it's in the rockfish family, not the sculpin family. Nicknames include scorpion, rattlesnake and little poker which should warn you to watch out for the spines which can deliver a very painful sting. If stung, the best thing to do is quickly put hot water on the area of the sting.
