Caught a small halibut, then hooked on to a bigger halibut but it broke my line, I was using 4lb test

I would suggest fishing heavier line for halibut. You will only be landing babies on 4 pound, and you'll give away a lot of hooks to the sea. The lightest I've seen work is 10 lb test, but I use heavier to flip shakers and avoid tail rot.

I use light line as well. I’m there to enjoy the sport and not feeding the family. Hook many more fish on the lower test and very little weight.

You can enjoy them just as much on Ten pound test. That being said, I grew up catching them on Two pound test. I still used 15 pound leader. On the beach, the sand is abrasive and will wear out light mono quickly. I mostly use ten pound running line and 15 fluorocarbon leader along the beach. Then I get to land the bigger fish I hook.

I have caught dozens of legals on 4lb and a couple on 2 lb as well. Keep enjoying using the light line.
