San Clemente Pier Sat 07/17

Set up near the surf and fished for spotfins. Caught one and lost another big one busting off. Bait was asian market cooked mussels. Can't locate any fresh in the markets anywhere. Any one know where to buy them? Also got 2 sargos (on shrimp). Interesting day, guy next to me caught a lobster and didn't know they existed in CA (he fished 20 years there)?? He released it. Another guy walking up and down the pier with an eel.

Just read Cuda J's report and he's right about the illegal activities on the pier. One guy caught a lot of spotfins, I am assuming over 10 and leaves them in the bucket. I saw him selling them to a lady and advertising them for sale. He was using fresh mussels from the pier. He had large bucket full of mussels. This guy was prepared to do some damage. I wasn't going to confront the guy, him being an older gentlemen and he had a large crowd cheering him on. Oh well. It was a fun day.

Did he have a tackle box made of tool caddy with handle and wheels?

I believe so, he had a dolly type cart set up. I know he's a regular, every time i go to that pier, he's there.

He is a regular who lives there. He usually fishes in the afternoon and nights. He likes to fish by the restaurant, at the foot of the pier.

I am sad to say he is Persian. I have met and told his friends that he is poaching, but they don't agree!

I had to stop my friendship, when he was bragging to me how he used to poach Sturgeon in Iran.
How he used to catch salmon illegally (can’t remember where he said).

There are other Iranian regulars, but he is the only one that I have witnessed selling fish.

Call fish and game. Take a picture of him and send to them. This is non confrontational and hopefully he will get nailed by authorities.

Caltip Active Violation (888) 334-2258 or text info to the following: CALTIP 847411. With all of the intelligence (information) on this poacher contained in this message string. Law enforcement should be able to nail him. Gotta keep the pressure on scofflaws.

There's really nothing you can do at that point.. like Mahigeer said, these guys know the rules & regs better than most. If warden comes.. they have 3 people in the group.. they can claim all the fish belongs to them sharing the same bucket of fish. He can deny selling fish as well. His words against mine.. Unless he lets you record the whole transaction?? The CALTIP is a joke.. you know it, i know it, and they know it.
