Salmon Trolling at Fort Bragg 9/3/2022

Family duties took me to norcal at Fort Bragg over this week. Seeing that it is the last weekend of recreational salmon fishing in the area I inquired about local landing and managed to find myself a spot in a half day trolling outing last Saturday with Kendall Lynn. She is a sweet six pack vessel operated by good folks. In particular she is equipped with 4 downriggers so only two rods used the 2lb lead balls.

We trolled with flashers about a few miles off from the Noyo harbor where we sighted quite a few humpback whales hanging out. No photo of them as they were too far. A local landed a short king right away and another angler hooked and landed a huge coho salmon! It was properly released back to ocean after a quick photos.

We had a bunch of biters after that but no one could land them including myself. I lost one good bite making my line untight. The barbless hook got away from the mouth so easily. Bites stopped after awhile then there was some quiet time. That’s when I saw my rod got loose. I carefully handled my rod this time and managed to land this nice king salmon.

Deckhand Richard ordered me to switch rods with another angler so we have a better chance of getting fish to everyone. Bites were happening deeper in the column like 150-200ft deep and my rod was targeting that. I concurred and switched to a rod fishing shalow at 70 feet down. After more bites that were missed by others, my shallow rod that did nothing for the entire morning started to bounce! I carefully landed even a nicer salmon. Making the deckhand scratch his head.

What a lucky day to land a limit of these beautiful Chinooks! I brought back the bounty to my friends and wife making a feast to remember for long!

Rigs were shimano tld or penn of the same kind with medium rods. 10 inch flasher with about 1 arm leaders. Some soft squid artificial spiked with dead anchovy. Line looked like 20lb mono. We all used boat’s renter rigs.
Noyo has a great public jetty where I know how to find striped perches and monkey face eels in low tides but I have not managed to hit it yet. I just booked myself a rock cod outings this Friday so I expect to have another non pier report of it. Stay tuned.

Great report and excellent fishing with those barbless hooks!
Yes those barbless hooks! It was pretty easy to lose fish especially when they get to the surface. I needed to reel it in with care keeping the rod as stable as I could. My past practice with baitfish on sabikis paid off :)

Thanks for the report. Fort Bragg used to be our main destination for Sportfishing trips when I lived in Boonville, both salmon and rockcod trips. The only problem was that we probably had to cancel our trips about 40% of the time due to rough conditions getting out of the harbor. A couple of times we made it out OK but saw some dangerous conditions coming back in. Never saw that boat, the boats I went out on were the Beulah, Lady Irma, Poopsie, Tally Ho, and Cavalier, the favorites being the Lady Irma and Poopsie.

I only went out on the Cavalier once due to the way the deckhands grabbed the rods and basically fought the fish to the back of the boat where they would then hand the rod to the angler. I told them I was experienced and didn't want that procedure used but they refused. So, I refused to use them again.

Great story! Thank you for sharing. I would hate the Cavalier style fishing too. I am not sure if I had seen those boats you enjoyed. They may be renamed/retired. Still there are handful of active sportfishing boats at FB. One called, Viking, just found 44 albacore tuna last Wednesday. I plan to join them for rockcods in two days!
