rockfish opener on the hulicat, half moon bay, california, 4/1/2019

fished in the hulicat today for the rockfish opener. got a nice limit of rockfish, had to throw back 2 undersized lings, and got 10 dungeoness crabs. everything is going down to fresno with me tomorrow afternoon. going to treat mom and dad to a nice crab dinner. thanks to good friend rick berg, a very old friend james from alaska, new friends kenton and travis, captains tom mattusch and mike cabanas, and deckhands mini-mike and matt juanes!

Thanks for the report.

It was good to see you at the FHS, this year.

If you are going to Cedros Island, look into Cedros Outdoor Adventures with Jose.

That's quite a haul you got there. What type of rig/set up for rock fishing? I've never been and am having trouble finding info on the net, well besides Dan Hernandez and his bucktail jig set up lol.

i have a charter booked with rosie at cedros sportfishing. i've spoken to jose and had considered booking with him, but decided to go with cedros sportfishing instead.

for my rockfish rig, it's pretty simple. i go old school and use a plain shrimpfly rig with whole squid and a one pound weight. the little ones will pick away at your baits, but the big ones swallow them whole. that's why all of my fish were big!

Great trip Alan! I went on the HuliCat rockfish/crab combo a couple days before Christmas. The crabbing was great, the codding, not so good. I used big baits but the bigger cod and lings weren’t available then. Tom Mattusch and crew are top notch. Great bunch of guys.

I hope next time you give Jose a chance. They work hard to give as good as service possible.

What size hook on your shrimp flu jig? 4/0 or larger?
