Robbery at Port Hueneme Pier

#2
Wow... I was fishing alone on the La Jenelle jetty two nights before that (11/10). The full moon and calm weather made me think it was OK but I was a hesitant because there might be thugs... Guess I was lucky. I hope the authorities will get the word out and fishers will be safe out there. I don't know if I'll do the jetty at night again w/o a buddy.

As for the fishing, I only caught one mack, which stuck me in the rocks and I spent 30 minutes hopping to the west jetty to free my line. I was hoping to catch something unusual from the submarine canyon nearby.

I hate to hear of stories like this Ken. I’ve never been bothered day or night in the many years I have fished SF Bay/Delta Piers/banks. And, I‘ve fished many nights by myself (without Big Rich McIntosh). I did fish many nights in the past with Bob Griffin; mostly at Berkeley Pier. I’ve fished Berkeley Pier at night by myself (I believe in winter) where I could only see one handful of people for the entire length of one-half mile of the pier. Martinez Pier, many a winter night right before the millennium where it was just me and the raccoons. I probably wouldn’t do it now as the lights have been broken out now. And, I recently fished Arrowhead Marsh as I mentioned at 80 Swan Way where I was the only one (but that place is clear cut).
I think it is a matter of knowing where you are and having a sense of the surrounding. For instance, I’m not going to fish Warm Water Cove Pier on 3rd/Evans at night.
True, something could happen anywhere, but some places are more predictable. I’ve heard of the gang violence in Ventura County. Digusting and unfortunate that it trickled onto the pier.

I haven't fished Hueneme much at night, but in general it is a fairly friendly pier. A friend was there Saturday. She said a lot of people were talking about the robbery (including a lot of misinformation), this reflects how much of an exception the robbery was.

  • Thanks for the insight Steve. I’ve fished a lot of piers once from the San Diego border to the Oregon Border (countless times the many San Francisco Bay piers).
  • I have been fortunate to never have had any problems with robbery/violence in the many years fishing these piers.
  • The incident in SF Bay that sticks out to this day in my mind is the fisherman that was stabbed to death and thrown in the water to his death (by another fisherman) at San Mateo Pier (also referred to as Foster City Pier). The area is a very upscale order and the people that live there don’t fish from a pier. One of the main reasons I am sure that the pier closed and will never reopen.
  • Other than that, some people have been robbed at the Alameda Rockwall at night because of the adjoining neighborhood to that particular part of Alameda. I‘ve never had a problem the few times I went there but I was just backed up to the ramp there and fished next to my car and had a 6’8”/300# friend with me.

This thread made me look up to statute that we are allowed by the state to be armed while fishing.

"The prohibition from carrying a concealed handgun does not apply to licensed hunters or fishermen while engaged in hunting or fishing, or while going to or returning from the hunting expedition . (Pen . Code, § 25640 .) Notwithstanding this exception for hunters or fishermen, these individuals may not carry or transport loaded firearms when going to or from the expedition . The unloaded firearms should be transported in the trunk of the vehicle or in a locked container other than the utility or glove compartment . (Pen . Code, § 25610 .) "

This information can be found here on page 12. (https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/pdf/cfl2016.pdf )

Though anyone who is not comfortable with a firearm or not adept in the use of their firearm may have it stolen from them. Case in point would be the bart stabbing that recently occurred where the assailant disarmed a good Samaritan and stabbed him with his own knife.
