Reef restoration project.

Long ago I went to some meetings regarding building a reef at the Long Beach pier. Maybe this one is instead of that.

It was called the Monsanto lawsuit project, or something similar.
It had to do with Monsanto Chemical Company dumping PCB and other chemicals in the ocean in Rancho Palos Verdes.

They would pay for the reef construction, so fish population would have a place to live and hopefully increase in numbers.

The first place considered was San Pedro, next to the Cabrillo pier. However, the bottom was too soft. Then Long Beach Veterans Pier was considered.

Perhaps the Rancho Palos Verdes is the final spot or in addition to Long Beach.

I have not heard from the committee since the last meeting.

Pretty much from day one among the various long term projects discussed by the people handling the Montrose Settlement was the establishment of reefs in the waters off the Palos Verdes Peninsula. What's most amazing to me is the the length of time it has taken to reach this point. I believe it's been over a decade since they first started having meetings which in turn generated more meetings and more meetings and more meetings and...It's how government works in California. How many years since the boat loading piling went out at the Malibu Pier and what should have been a fairly easy easy fix has been at least 4-5 years. How many years since the Gaviota Pier was closed from winter storm damage — 6-7?
Too many examples to simply shrug it off.

The last part which I already knew was sort of oxymoron for me.

They are bringing rocks from the quarry in Catalina! They are taking away rocks from an island to bring them to a mainland!

I guess it is cheaper.

Most of the jetties in socal came from the catalina rock quarry.

Pretty soon there will be no island to go to!

It must be matter of cost. No decisions are made without considering the money issue.

Cost and accessability. You can pull the barge right up to the island and then tow it directly to the site. Then use a bulldozer or crane to dump the rock off the barge. And in 50 more years Catalina will have a really nice flat spot to be able expand Avalon.

I thought about that. It reduces the cost, I am sure.

Goes back to the budget issue.

There are a lot of opaleye in the quarry area. Used to see a lot of anglers get off the Catalina Express and take a taxi to the quarry to fish for opaleye.

Pebbly Beach in 2006-2007 was the farthest I have fished in that direction.
