Redondo Beach - King Harbor 10-20-2020

I was feeling quite nostalgic after re-reading Ken’s article on the Redondo Sportfishing Pier and King Harbor. Prior to today, I hadn’t fished King Harbor in over 25 years.

So, I checked out YouTube to see if anyone posted any recent fishing action out at the “Bubble Hole”. I saw a video of bonito being caught last week on the splasher rig and decided to take a trip out to King Harbor.

I arrived pretty early, 6 am, to secure a good spot and to reminisce on where my fishing journey began. I thought about my grandpa picking up my brother and I at 5 in the morning during school vacation in the summer to go fishing. Grandpa would speed through red lights on the way to Redondo Beach Pier and flip the bird at those who dared to honk their horn at his faded blue 1978 Chevy Nova.

The morning was overcast with little to no wind. The harbor appeared very peaceful and calm. I was joined by a fellow splasher rig fisherman, Steve, and we had an awesome conversation about the Sportfishing Pier and King Harbor.

The fishing action picked up at 8 am as my feather was pounced on by a 2-2.5 lb bonito. Steve followed up with a nice bonehead of his own. I caught 2 more bonito before heading out at 10 am. I gave my catch to Steve, who was going to make his version of the tuna sandwich with the fish.

Catching bonito was a bonus this morning. I couldn’t have asked for better company and conversation. Until next time King Harbor...

DGW,
By the photos, it looks like you were fishing near Joe's Crab Shack. Is that correct? Where do you park to fish King Harbor?

Steve
Yes, I fished on one of the two platforms along the splash wall near Joe’s Crab Shack.

I parked in the parking lot where Ruby’s restaurant is. The parking lot gate was up when I arrived, but when I left the gate was down and there was a parking attendant there. I had to pay $2 an hour for parking.
