Pursuit end at Newport Pier

At about 7 am there was a pursuit from Santa Ana to Newport Pier with both Santa Ana P.D. and Newport Beach P.D. chasing a person wanted in a homicide. They chased him clear to the deep end of the pier and promptly shot him dead. Good ending for a bad guy. Unfortunately the pier will be closed for the investigation.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that the pursuit ended at the end of the pier? A bit suicidal? Like the Michael Douglas movie, through I think that one ended on Venice pier.
