Pepper Park Pier short report

#1
Received some Intel that Big Corvina around the pier. Brought my best surface lures. Fished today from 12pm to about 245 pm tossed everything for nothing. Only thing exciting was a big needle fish followed my shimano waxwing lure, but it did not strike. Saw some major boils away from the pier.

Saw 2 big mackerel caught on sabiki rigs. One guy using shrimp caught 3 black croakers. A lady next to me caught a small needle fish. Cool looking fish.

BTW...a Russian yacht was seized by customs and docked nearby. For you rich guys it's currently bidding at 325 million.

Has there ever been needlefish up at Oceanside pier Mr. Ken? I want to catch one, also have you heard anybody got yellowtail on a pier this year yet?
bassfanatick, I checked the pier's records and though it shows 62 different species being caught at the pier, needlefish are not one of them. That doesn't mean none have ever been caught but if they were it was unrecorded. As a general rule, needlefish are much more common in bays and harbors.

As for the yellowtail, we lost our reporter for the Crystal Pier when the bait shop closed and it tended to be the best pier for yellowtail (August-September). Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to get fish reports and one result is no reports of yellowtail this fall.

I've heard that yellowtail were / are around mission bay jetty however apparently they are difficult to catch. Would you know anything about that and why the fish are there? One angler who tried to target them indicated these yellow tail were really smart. They would chase/follow the lure but won't commit to the strike...

I have read multiple reports on people actually landing the yellowtail near the jetty.
