An oldie — The Fishermen, By W. K. Priest, California Poets 1932

They meet and they chat and they tell their tales

Of catching fish that were as large as whales,

And the wonderful times they had that day

Of their vacation when they went away.

And we listen and laugh, as they do, too

And we act as if we believed them true.

They are pleased again as they act the scene—

How they caught the fish in the raging stream.

And whether it is fish or gold or gear,

We all are fishermen throughout the year.

And it pleases us one and it pleases us all,

To have caught some fish be they ever so small.

So, wherever you go or whatever you do

You ever will find this saying is true;

“’Twill please the fishermen to believe their tales

Of catching fish that were as large as whales,”

One more —Their Beauty Has More Meaning — Robinson Jeffers

Yesterday morning enormous the moon hung low on the ocean,

Round and yellow-rose in the glow of dawn;

The night-herons flapping home wore dawn on their wings. Today

Black is the ocean, black and sulphur the sky,

And white seas leap. I honestly do not know which day is more beautiful.

I know that to-morrow or next year or in twenty years

I shall not see these things:—and it does not matter, it does not hurt;

They will be here. And when the whole human race

Has been like me rubbed out, they will still be here; storms, moon and

Ocean,

Dawn and the birds. And I say this: their beauty has more meaning

Than the whole human race and the race of birds.
