So on Saturday I picked up a new surf rod at Outdoor Pro Shop......an 11' Okuma Rockaway 8-17lb 1/2-20z .......SWEET ROD GUYS.......$109.99.......The new 11' rod was lighter than the butt section alone of my Okuma Solaris Surf Rod......I paired it with an Okuma Alaris 4000 Reel $29.99.......and Spooled it with Reaction Tackle 20# Braid in Fluorescent Green.........GREAT PIER COMBO FOR STRIPERS.......Casts VERY WELL....and Rod and Reel are a well balanced combo.......Reel claims to have 17.5# of drag......
For the money I can seriously recommend both the rod and reel.........The Rod is available in 9', 10', 11'. and 12' length and a couple of different line/lure ratings
The Braid from Reaction Tackle is also VERY PROMISING.......Very limp.......not too abrasive....Not real load going through the guides....no real color loss to speak of yet.......$41.99/1500 yards
I also picked up an 11' Berkeley Crappie Rod at Sportsman's Warehouse for $39.99........Coupled with a low profile casting reel it is going to be SWEET for perch in the surf using light grubbing techniques or with a bobber for jacksmelt when they start showing up better......
