Saturday, August 27, from 10:30 until 12:30, is the Kids Day on the Pier at the Marin Rod & Gun Club.

Kids 6-15 are eligible to participate and there will be ten age group winners with each receiving a trophy and a copy of my book. Loaner rods and reels will be available as well as free bait. After the event there will be a hot dog lunch, the announcement of the winners, and a raffle in which every youngster should be able to walk away with a rod and reel.

Adults accompanying the kids are not expected to fish during the event although some usually do after the event is over. Be aware that this is a private pier and a fishing license is required for anyone 16 years of age or older.

The kids: They are asking anyone who is bringing children to register them by the 21st and I am suggesting registering them before the 20th. You can list them below and I can then call in the names. They need to know the numbers so that they can plan the food, bait, and finalize the details for the after-fishing program.

As usual, hot dog lunches will be provided after the fishing and I believe the awards and prizes will be given inside, as usual. As planned, every kid should receive a rod and reel.

Volunteers: As always we hope to have some volunteers from PFIC. Primary duties will be setting up the loaner equipment and serving as judges.

In the past, volunteers show up in the morning by 8:30am (9 at the latest).

Some volunteers may register entrants at the main booth outside the pier but I think we have enough volunteers for that.

Volunteers usually organize/set up loaner rods from PFIC and the ones that MRGC have as loaner rods

Volunteers tie leaders on the rods with like single or double dropper loops and attach pre-snelled hooks (Robert sometimes ties a few rigs as slider rigs (Carolina/fish-finder).

Pass out some bait to kids - usually anchovies/squid pre-cut (or MRGC/PFIC cuts and baggies).

Give some brief instruction on methodology: how and where to cast/tactics/safety.

Collect rods where line breaks, rig breaks and give children a different rod or re-tie the line.

Collect catch data and judge/score the catch. This requires walking up and down the pier and taking weight or measurement and marking the data on the score cards. If possible, also contact Ken to come take photos or taking a photo with cell phone and texting it for proof.

Generally, some of the volunteers will stay after the event and fish from the pier which is normally closed to non club members.

Okay Ken, but where is the registration information for people that may be bringing kids from this forum? What, do they just call the Rod & Gun Club (MRGC) @ (415) 456-3123 and tell them how many are to attend? And I didn't see the event on the MRGC calendar today (but saw other events scheduled).
-I can definitely see why they need a head count for the hotdog lunch as the numbers have varied years from anywhere around 20-50 kids or so.
-I realize this event may be evolving over the years, but it seems like it is becoming less of a public event. I've enjoyed it every year for over (10) years because it falls around the time of my birthday.

Hi Ken,

My family will be there - only one left in the age limit but I'll bring my nephew too. Can you register their names for me? I can't figure out how to do it on the Marin R&G Club website.

Vincent de Jong - 12
Duke de Jong - 8

We'll get there at 8:30 to help if needed! See you then.

What's the best way to volunteer? (I think I posted on the other thread, but it got deleted.) Just show up at 8:30 and say we're from PFIC?

I can tie rigs, bag up some bait, and have a few loaner light rods to bring. I also have a great camera to capture photos for the day.

(1) They are in the process of paving the parking lot which MAY affect Saturday's parking. People may need to enter at the back entrance and if so people will be there to direct traffic

(2) Due to continued worries about covid they are trying to hurry the awards ceremony along (when everyone is on the large auditorium). Don't know if it's possible but hope to be done by 1 p,m,

(3) Expect weather in the '70s with some wind.
