A reminder that this Saturday is the kids derby at the Marin Rod and Gun Club Pier in San Rafael. The derby is open to kids 6-15 and you don't have to be a club member to bring your child. The event runs 10 am to 2 pm with actual fishing from about 10 to 1. Registration should start around 9-9:15.

Check out the following article about the 2017 event to get a feel for the derby and I hope many of you will bring your kids.

Loaner rods and reels are available as is free bait and peole will be on the pier to help the kids land their fish. A hot dog lunch will also be provided and every kid will receive a prize (last year every kid got a rod and reel).

PFIC members will be helping in a number of ways — and we can always use a few more peole. Afterward some of the PFIC members will join out at the pier to do a little fishing. Normally the pier is closed to non-members but Redfish will be there, Mel will be there, Brian (illcatchanything) will be there, I will be there, and several other PFIC members will be there. It's sort of an impromptu get together. One caution is that it's a private pier so a fishing license is required for the adults.

I'm going to try to make this. What are the most likely species to encounter? Well, I just looked at your link and answered my own question - nice summary.

Everyone seemed to have a really fun-filled day. Biggest fish was a 52-inch leopard shark while most of the fish were large jacksmelt; a couple of stripers and halibut also were caught. Did get to do do a few hours of fishing with redfish (Robert) and Alex after the event. Mostly big jacksmelt although I did manage to catch a 33-inch leopard along with a smaller .one. Negative tides may have hurt the fishing a little

Yep, that's him. An up and coming star angler. Even better is that he seems like a really nice young man. He has come to several of our derbies including last year's Marin derby and the one in Trinidad — and he won prizes in both. IMG_4756.2.jpg

I probably will not finish my report on the derby until at least tomorrow but here's a few more pictures including some with the name DeJong (a new board member).
