I can't speak for MiserT, but my first experience with Japanese style grilled smoked mackerel was at a
Japanese supermarket (Yaohan) back in the mid 90s in LA's little Tokyo that I got in a food court
bento-box. Was some mackerel on a bed of white rice. It had a smoky flavor. The fish was missing the
head and butterflied then grilled on skewers. It had grill marks and had been scored. It was seasoned
with salt and had a wonderful smoky flavor and a flaky texture.
