Saturday, August 28 from 10:30 until 12:30 is the Kids Day on the Pier at the Marin Rod & Gun Club.

Kids 6-15 are eligible to participate and there will be ten age group winners with each receiving a trophy and a copy of my book. Loaner rods and reels will be available as well as free bait. After the event there will be a hot dog lunch, the announcement of the winners, and a raffle in which every youngster should be able to walk away with a rod and reel.

Adults accompanying the kids are not expected to fish although some usually do after the event is over (and a license is required). Given that the end of the pier is closed, the pier may be a little more crowded than usual.

There have been a few changes:

They are asking anyone who is bringing children to register them by the 21st and I am suggesting registering them below by the 20th. I can then call in the names. They need to know the numbers so that they can plan the food, bait, and finalize the details for the after-fishing program.

Given the Covid restrictions the typical awards meeting in the large hall will probably not happen. Lunches will probably be eaten outside, the awards made outside, and kids will go into the hall one at a time to choose their raffle prizes. Last I heard they will not require masks outside.

It will be a little different than past derbies but it simply reflects the current situation.

Sign up below if bringing a youngster. Thanks.

Hi Ken, my boys and I can attend, Thomas (15) and Vincent (11). I can help setup, prep bait, tackle, rods, record sizes or whatever. What time should we show up to help get things ready?

Last minute alert! Just got a call from the man coordinating the event at the club. Although he had set the cut-off date for registration for last Saturday, and both he and I had gotten the supplies we needed to get for 65 kids (the number that day), it turned out he wasn't able to stop club members from registering. They felt they had paid their money as club members and should be able to bring the kids no matter if there was a final day for registration. One included a member who is apparently bringing 18 kids who are sons/daughters of San Quentin prisoners (or guards?). The number today is 101 youngsters.

I'm flexible and can get the additional papers I need but I told him that all of a sudden that might mean there are not enough loaner rods/reels, bait, food, etc. He's scrambling for those things.

Please, if you are bringing a youngster and have rod/reels for them bring them along. It will help.

Look forward to seeing some of you there.

I plan to get here around 8:30. According to the club they've gotten everything pretty well covered but we'll see. There rarely are too many people involved.

By the way, I'm sorry but I will not be joining in and fishing after the derby. Usually I do a few hours fishing but this is a non-fishing trip. The weekend is going to serve as an early 55th anniversary trip and Pat will be with me. She's going to help register kids Saturday morning but the rest of Saturday and Sunday morning will be devoted to her and not to fishing. It's tough not bringing my rod and reel to an area I love to fish but sometimes you have other priorities.
