The annual "Kids Day on the Pier" at the Marin Rod and Gun Club Pier in San Rafael is scheduled for Saturday, August 10.

The event is free to all kids. They will see a winner in each age group category as well as raffle prizes (generally free rods and reels for all) and a free hot dog lunch.

We will need some help rigging the rods, cutting up the bait, and helping judge the event. If you can make it please send me a message — kenjones@pierfishing.com — and I will give you more details.

This may be the last time UPSAC (or what's left of it) is a part of the event. I will be there as will be Redfish and I think Rita so come over and offer a helping hand if you are free that day. Those who help out will also get a chance to fish from the pier which is normally closed to the public. Almost every year a core group of UPSAC friends fishes for a few hours after the event. Do remember it is a private pier so all adults who are fishing need a fishing license.

BTW, If you have any old rods and reels you would want to donate they are welcome. They have some guys at the club who fix and clean up tackle and they will go to the kids.

(1) I think equipment can be dropped off at the club. You will find the gate closed but if you walk in to the clubhouse there is almost always someone there who can help you out. (2) The event if from 10-2 but we need helpers to show up around 8:30-9 so that we have time to rig the equipment and get the sign-in set up.

This Saturday is the day and yes we can still use more volunteers. I'm also a little worried about loaner rods so if you're willing to let a stranger use a rod bring it along. It looks like we could also use some additional 2-ounce sinkers. Lastly — don't forget that we hope to do a little fishing with the UPSAC gang after the kids derby.
