If you plan to go to Catalina to fish from Mole

I suggest calling the Harbor Patrol office and ask if the demolition has started on the Mole.

I heard different rumors that it may start any day or in a month. Some said may not happen either.

If demolition and construction begin, chances are for safety, no fishing will be allowed at the Mole.

There is a slight possibility that after the project is completed, anglers will not have a place to fish.

In that case, we will have to see what we can do about our rights to fish a California public pier.

I will be at Avalon for the New Year's party, so I would know for sure if the project has started.

Report to follow after that.

They replaced big beams under the relief grids and the grids. They were all badly rusted. They also resurfaced a partial area.

The new plan calls for demolishing all of the existing buildings and building new ones. To resurface the rest of the Mole.

A restaurant is also planned to be added to a two-story building. Adding more places for passengers to get stupid drunk, before getting on the boat. Something that the Catalina Express ground crew is not happy about.

I have made friends with the Catalina Express ground crew in Avalon. Especially the leadman.

He is to text me when the project starts.

So far, no news which is the good news.

There is some good news.

I called Harbor Master, Chamber of Commerce and the City of Avalon. I told each that I was getting conflicting information and needed some facts.

Finally, the operator at the city told me; after some gathering of information while I was on hold, that they are starting to send out notices for bid to contractors.

That tells me that they are a few months away from the start.

I told her that the Cabrillo Mole was a California public pier, and since my rights to fish is in the California Constitution, it cannot be closed to fishing after the construction is completed.

She agreed.

I plan to be there on 11/22-23/2022 and 12/31/2022-1/1/2023

Your post about the gala at Casino, made me decide to do it. For years, I have been talking about it.

I am going with family and taking the 11:50 Am boat home on January 1. However, I will be fishing the Friday and Saturday.

Too bad. We'll miss each other fishing. I'll be fishing the 1st and the 2nd. But it will be fun to see you at the gala!
