Hurricane Ernesto is set to bring dangerous swimming conditions and possible rain to Long Island this weekend, as the Category 2 hurricane is expected to pass through Bermuda on Saturday and impact the Northeast.

Absolutely!
Plenty to catch during the different seasons as the above article describes. Most people go there to catch Fluke which is very similar to the California Halibut,
15 minutes to the East was Jones Beach State Park which has 4 fishing piers on the State Channel at Field 10.

NY had no piers on the Ocean except for Coney Island (technically the NY Bight).
