Tried my luck at HB pier this morning. Nonstop Thornback Ray bite. In total I caught and released 33 Thornies. They hit anything and everything I tossed out as bait. I caught the fish using squid, mackerel, shrimp, anchovy, smelt, lizardfish, and even live Salema!
I wasn't sure what to expect because I had not fished this pier in a while. I was hoping something different would go after the small live Salema I had caught with a sabiki rig. But, the Thornbacks got to the baits first.
It was fun catching the fish and the non stop bite action was great. However, a little more variety would have been interesting.
During all this action I had multiple double hook ups on the high/low rig setup. On one double hook my rod tip broke. I managed to hand line the two large thornies who were responsible for the damage! Disappointed to lose the rod.
There were a few fishermen on the pier. Did not see them with any fish prior to my departure. Overall, fun morning on the pier.
I purchased an annual parking permit. So I hope to return more often and hopefully catch other species of fish.
Good luck everyone!
