How to pour lead sinkers, my version.

#29
Trying to decide if I need any more DO-IT Molds for the fishing I do...….Maybe a couple of egg sinker molds...….
Buy them used at Ebay. It can become addictive. I started with one, then all I needed was the molds.

Suddenly I got 18 molds!!!

Due to the time it takes for setup (for me), I have not poured any in a while.

Good God Man..... You must fish a LOT more than I do

I have purchased several off eBay but they all ended up being damaged and almost unusable......Most were returned....I am pretty picky about thing I pay money for being AS DESCRIBED...….A some Pencil Lead molds of different sizes one good Jig Head mold would be nice to have......and an Egg Sinker Mold...…..and...…..

Set-up is pretty easy for me......As soon as the afternoon breeze comes up I am going to refine some of my lead and pour some smaller ingots for the melting pot that arrives tomorrow...…….I might actually SELL my In-Line Trolling Sinker Mold and get a Pencil Sinker Mold instead......Just wish I had more sawdust to flux my lead scrap

Nice writeup. Lead does not produce fumes or vapors below 1200 degrees F. So any fumes produced come from impurities burning off.
If you have good pure lead, I found no need for respirator or even a fan in a large enough area (concrete floor or workbench in garage would be good) Lead poisoning more likely to occur thru handling lead and ingesting it. Gloves, goggles and clothing to cover all body parts are essential but no special clothing needed. Finding good source of lead seems to be biggest problem.

I used to re-load all my shotgun shells and I have about 120lbs of lead shot still in the bags and another 100 lbs of reclaimed lead shot if anyone wants it.
No lead pouring required ling killer! Fill 1/2 in (or bigger) copper pipe with lead shot. Drill attachment points on the pipe for hooks and split ring. The copper and lead rattling around really attracts the lings. Google for more instructions.

The best lead I have found so far is roofing lead......I buy all of it I can at the salvage yard...….I just can't get lucky enough to get bags of shot for a good price around here.

I am getting my Lee Production Pot TOMORROW so I poured some smaller ingots for the pot and made some pull wires from old wire coat hangers for my no-roll sinker mold. I also make some paper tubes for pencil sinkers......90# Cardstock Paper is what I use for the tubes....and I use recycled brass or copper wire for the eyes

OK......So today's casting session was pretty much a BUST...….I did get about 15 pounds of larger ingots fluxed a second time and even purer than they were......But when it came to production PFFFFFFFT...…..The 90# Cardstock Paper Tubes simply did not work well......Contrary to the YouTube Videos....I made them damn thick and they still produced malformed leads.....I made several batches of 1 and 1 1/2 ounce No Roll Sinkers with Eyelets Successfully but I had no such luck when trying to make the slip sinkers......My Wire Coat Hanger pull wires worked but I had one hell of a time getting the 1 and 1 1/2oz leads to cast right with the pull wires in place.....Guess I have to get them hot somehow before putting them in the mold but that will be frustrating as hell...…HEY AMAZON...….WHERE IS MY LEE PRODUCTION POT??????…….No Updates available since before 8am...….Since the paper tubes were a bust I will stick to tubes of aluminum foil instead.....I was MUCH more successful with them

I was also using used cooking oil to flux my lead and it smoked a lot but it WORKED GREAT

Just an update......AMAZON lost my Lee Production Pot somewhere so I had to order a replacement.....Have nearly all of my lead fluxed at least twice except for the last of my roofing lead sheet that I am keeping as is for now......Got the pull wires figured out for the no roll sinker mold....I just need to get more 10 gauge wire for the pulls......Got quite a few sinkers cast today....all 1 or 1 1/2 oz No Roll Sliders, or No Roll Sinkers with eyes.....I found some bailing wire in my shed so I AM SET FOR EYELET FIRE FOR LIFE......Plan as it stands is to hit the high at Fort Baker on Sunday hoping for perch.
