How many have had reservations canceled?

I was notified yesterday by email that my camping reservations for Lime Kiln Creek for the last week of June (yes, it's May 23, friends) were canceled. Suffice to say, my family is very upset that we will not enjoy our camping and fishing trip we booked 6 months ago.

For now, I will avoid a pointless rant about State Parks being closed while golf courses are opened, but I intend to share my frustration about this with my elected representatives (some of them are current parents at my school, so I have gotten to know them well), and wanted to see if any of you might share some anecdotes on how state park camping/use restrictions or cancellations have affected folks.

I'm sharing this on the pier/surf fishing board specifically for the reason that our LA County information releases on COVID-19 reopenings at beaches have continued to NOT include fishing as an "approved" activity at beaches. You can surf, run, walk, cavort, frolic, or use the god-forsaken disgusting public bathrooms... but fishing is not listed and my attempts for clarification have gone unanswered. And really... like Gordo Grande used to say-- I try to only vacation in places where I can fish.

Going back many years we had six foreign exchange students stay at our home. One I call my Danish son and he has been here many times and we've visited him in Europe three times. Five years ago his eldest daughter upon turning 13 made her first solo trip across the Atlantic to visit us for two weeks.

Two years ago ago his middle daughter also tuned 13 and made a similar trip.

This summer his youngest daughter turns 13 and (it's now a tradition) planned to visit us for the first two weeks in July. But maybe not!

At the start of the year I made reservations at the Wawona Lodge in Yosemite. Four weeks ago they contacted me and said they will be closed for the year. We had to find new digs. But, Yosemite is still closed. And, a couple of places that Pat was planning to go in San Simeon and Solvang have been shut down. Plus, no planes are being allowed into the US from Europe. The only question is if and when we cancel the visit.

As for fishing, about the only pier that I know is open (on a limited basis) is the Marin Rod and Gun Club Pier, a mere four hour drive away. None of the central coast piers, as far as I know, are open.

yes its tough so far i haven't been told not to fish off the beach in long beach the pier is closed and the boat ramp is open so its kinda pick and choose what the gov wants to open to us doesn't seem even handed plus i need a hair cut ha

First world problems. Many of us have been inconvenienced by the virus. But we are still alive, so griping is a bit pathetic. Somehow this great republic has diminished. We have gone from Can Do to Sez Who to Screw You. No way we'd have won WWII with this self-centeredness.

My son and his wife had to cancel their trip to the UK this year. They did not write or contact their representatives (or use their position of authority to "influence" them; I am being politely euphemistic for the bully pulpit tactics). No, my son is working from home and doing volunteer work. My daughter-in-law, while she finishes up her Master's, is going door to door with contact tracing. Life is unfair, yet they do not lament or complain.

Compassion is a better use of mental energy than bitching.

Personally, I think we walk a fine line between cooperation and trying to do the right thing and turning over our thoughts and actions to what at times are petty bureaucrats giving health directives that may or may not reflect sound medical advice. I wear the masks when I am out, and I do the social distancing, but I also feel much of the criticism of policy is well founded. As example, for me the decision to allow people to go to a large chain store like a WallMart or CostCo while restricting many of the small local businesses makes little sense. And, there are many such decisions that defy logic. In addition, I know some local businesses excluded from shut downs due to who the owner knew — and I am sure it is the same in every town. We all want to work together but there are those afraid to do anything, those willing to do anything, and most who are somewhere in between but policies to date have been inconsistent and frankly at times lacking in common sense, especially when it comes to actual sound medical sense. It reminds me of when I talked to a doctor one time about an operation on a blown disk. He said there was a risk of permanent paralysis if something went wrong. I could avoid that risk and not have the operation but I would have the pain for the rest of my life. Or, I could take the risk and probably be pain free for the rest of my life. I took the risk and haven't had that pain since the operation—more than 25 years ago. There is always risk in life, risk from a thousand and one various things, but some of the people/politicians/bureaucrats making decisions today do not seem willing to admit that fact. They will decide what's right and if you disagree or protest they threaten jail (while letting the actual criminals out of jail). Some remind me of the petty officials that ruled over their fellow citizens in fascist Nazi Germany.

People in WWI and WW II pulled together but griping was also a constant, it's not something new. Gripe but do the job, that's life. Personally, I prefer to have people/citizens who question and try to keep leaders on their toes than people who meekly go along with every government directive as though the leaders were some kind of divine figures who are always right and can't be questioned.
