Was going through a tackle box of mine a found 3 old Hopkins no equal jigs and 4 accetta pet spoons. Apparently the Hopkins jigs are made of stainless steel and weigh in at 1.25 ounces ~ 5 inches and the pet spoons were chromed brass weighing about .75 ounces~ 4 inches. I did some research and see that hopkins jigs are really an east coast striper thing, but do you guys use these for anything? And about those pet spoons, are those any good? Most I saw about them was that they were trolling spoons. FC831AAD-BADE-4A12-8671-632D71F162C7.jpeg

I just purchased two 10 unit lots of Hopkins "Type" Jigs from Amazons in 1/2 and 1oz Sizes......I plan on using them for Jetty Jigging because they were pretty cheap......NOT the quality of the originals......These are chrome plated brass.....and not well plated at that.....I am tweaking them out with paints, glitters, and dressed hooks......

I have no experience with the PET Spoons

Man, your lucky. Hopkins were one of my “Go To” jigs. You can jig them the traditional way or use them like micro jigs. They have good action. I prefer to add a splitring in front. I’m always paranoid of the edge cutting my line.

I just redid the feathers on a Pet Spoon last week. Some people troll them. I cast them out and reel slow or fast mid water to surface. On a sandy bottom, I’ll reel, bounce, stop, reel, bounce, stop, in that order.

My problem is that I’m always paranoid of loosing them.

Sucks that all these lures still are made, but cost upwards of $10 these days. It really does give you that hollow sensation in your heart when a lure pops off during a cast or gets snagged. Now if only tackle could get any cheaper...

That’s the reason I keep cheap jigs and gear around. They do have their place. You can barrow this cheapo but not my Hopkins. Lol People look at you crazy when u say “NO” with a box full of jigs. Haha

Say, would rigging up one of those cheapo spoons Carolina rig style to increase weight and casting distance be a good idea? It seems like it would help, but the weight might create some changes to the action, not to mention helicoptering during casts. Anyone try this?

I tried it once a long time ago but you DO get that helecopter action going when you cast. I think I was trying to give action to dead bait but it really didn't work for me. If you are talking about adding those short leader assist hooks, it can work just as long as they're not too long.

Better off just buying a heavier spoon
