"Fishing is worth any amount of effort and any amount of expense to people who love it, because in the end, you get such a large number of dreams per fish."
—Anon

“The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.” —John Buchan

“A moderator of passions, a procurer of contentedness... [Fishing] begat habits of peace and patience in those that professed and practised it.” —Izaak Walton

“Many men fish all their lives without ever realizing it is not fish they are after.”— Henry David Thoreau

"I have no desire to latch onto a monster symbol of fate and prove my manhood in titanic piscine war. But sometimes I do like a couple of cooperative fish of frying size." — John Steinbeck

"Some go to church and think about fishing; others go fishing and think about God." —Anon

“He was fishing for his soul, not his stomach.” —Robert Deindorfer

The Fishermen By W. K. Priest — California Poets 1932

They meet and they chat and they tell their tales
Of catching fish that were as large as whales,
And the wonderful times they had that day
Of their vacation when they went away.

And we listen and laugh, as they do, too
And we act as if we believed them true.
They are pleased again as they act the scene—
How they caught the fish in the raging stream.

And whether it is fish or gold or gear,
We all are fishermen throughout the year.
And it pleases us one and it pleases us all,
To have caught some fish be they ever so small.

So, wherever you go or whatever you do
You ever will find this saying is true;
Twill please the fishermen to believe their tales
Of catching fish that were as large as whale.

Quint: Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark… he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah, then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all the pounding’ and the hollering’, they all come in and they… rip you to pieces. — Jaws

My heart and soul are bound with Steinbeck. He and Ed Ricketts are two people who always come to mind when my friends play the, "Who in history would you have a dinner with?"
I always visit Pacific Biological on Cannery Row and Steinbeck's grave when I go to Salinas. Those visits will always ground me.

Ricketts and Steinbeck are also favorites of mine. Rickett's "Between Pacific Tides" has an honored place in my library.

I feel the need to add a quote from Ed Zern, founder of the Madison Avenue Rod, Gun, Bloody Mary & Labrador Retriever Benevolent Association, and writer of the Exit Laughing column on the back page of Field and Stream when I was a kid.
