Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon — Report

Green Pleasure Pier (Avalon, Catalina Island) – I talked to the Harbor Master and the pier is open but hotels and restaurants in Avalon are hit and miss, some open, some not. Given that the Mole is closed, pier fishing is restricted to the pleasure pier but he said it’s usually not crowded. When open it’s the normal mix of fish—kelp bass, opaleye, halfmoon, rock wrasse, senorita, sheephead , etc. How To Get There: The trick here is to get to Catalina. Ships and helicopters make the journey several times a day from the Port of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Newport Beach. Information is available on all of these by calling the Avalon Chamber of Commerce on the Pleasure Pier (213) 510-1520 or the Visitor's Information & Service Center (213) 510-2500. Once in Avalon there should be no problem in finding the pier, which is located at the foot of Catalina Avenue.

The governor just closed down all dining rooms and gathering areas as well as state beach parking in 19 counties. LA being one of them. I heard the piers in those counties are closed again. Might need to check again tomorrow when everyone has had time to figure out what exactly is closed.

The Harbor Master was aware of the order but said as far as he knew the pier would be open. As for the restaurants, some are and some are not open; biggest problem is with bars. Best approach is probably to just avoid Avalon this wekend.

I should think, there will be no fireworks at Avalon this year on July 4th.

The Avalon Harbor Pleasure Pier known more popularly as Green Pleasure Pier (GPP) has a lot of kiosks for tourist oriented businesses.

Although there may not be many tourists at this time, the kiosks may be open. Thus, the pier may remain open.

Given that people cannot fish at the Cabrillo Mole, the Green Pleasure Pier is the main alternative for pier anglers. Glad to see it remains open for fishing.
