Great news for California anglers.

I'm also not affected because I've been getting a license as a Christmas gift for the past...many decades (is she trying to tell me something?). But I think this is an excellent idea whose time is long overdue. I've often wondered how many people catch the fishing bug in the summer and decide that a full fee for a half-year is not worth it. Fear of the law is not a deterrent, not now, not ever. So perhaps this will encourage anglers to pony up and get that license, which is, given the vast opportunities and locales for fishing in this state, a bargain.

My pleasure.

I too buy mine first of the year, but I like this better. I like the senior discount. The phone thing, is something else I got to learn how to use.

The lobster card was changed to season, so the license part was due to change.

The next Bill should be initiated and passed in Sacramento to waiver or discount license fees for all seniors living in the State of California, just like it has been done long ago by other states in the Union.

There already is a reduced fee available to seniors who are disabled or of low income. The rest of us can certainly afford to pay the "normal" price of a fishing license. And we should, without complaint.

My main fishing time is during the summer so generally I've been deterred to pay for an annual license that lasts half a year. (Last year and this year I mainly fished from the pier as a result.) It is definitely not worth it for me. With this change I can buy my annual license any time knowing it will last a year. So I find this change very encouraging to the fishing community.

I do wish the lifetime licenses were a bit more affordable.

This is great news, I had friends this year who wanted to fish with me but did not get an annual license because it was already August, so they got the daily license. But then we went out for halibut on a charter and went rock fishing from shore a few times too, so that $17 plus change added up anyway. They will be sure to get an annual license now, but it does help people who are in the same boat so to say.

The lifetime license could be a bargain depending on angler’s age when he/she buys it.

The younger the angler is the better.
It may be a bargain but it's a lot of money up front. If it were $100-$150 cheaper I think it would offer a better value to most anglers ages 10+.

I understand it can be dependent on how often you are fishing throughout the year...

I do agree that the younger ages would cost much less. I guess it would make a good gift to a young angler.

Definitely not cheap especially if you get (will need) the Ocean Enhancement Stamp.
