Quick Narrative: Showed up late to the pier as the gate was just about to swing closed on the parking lot (about 4pm). Gathered my fishing equipment, loaded it in my cart, and proceeded on the walk to the pier. I encountered a fellow fisherman, Tuka, in the lot and told him to head on as he had already loaded his equipment and I was just starting.

I entered the pier to find a pier full of regulars on a Thursday with nothing to show for their time on the water except 1 barely keeper striper caught by “ Honduras José.”
I was offered some bait by locals Rick and Sean, so I was spared throwing the castnet this time. I offered them some libations in return for their kind gesture that they gladly received.

Then, I tied up 2 salmon/steelhead casting rods with dropper loops and smelt.
I fished at the beginning of the pier on the wooden railing because the rest of the smallish pier was taken up with regulars.

I got 1 good run before I set up my second rod, but unfortunately the Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp 1/0 all-purpose hook wasn’t very sharp, and as soon as I lost a little tension, the hook came out because it didn’t penetrate the skin. Mauriano had already ran from the end of the pier ready to assist me with netting.

After that miss, most of the regulars that had been there had packed up and started walking off the pier for home save Oren, Don, José, Tuka, and I.

Minutes later (about 40), down goes my left rod and I fought a very fat 23.5” halibut to the net.
At this time, Oren, Don, and José departed.
I got 1 other halibut later at 21” that I splashed quickly back over the rail. IMG_9896.jpeg

Well done, Red! Funny how that seems to happen. Sometimes you might be the "I've been fishing all day and haven't gotten a bite" guy, and then see a "short timer" arrive who hooks up and lands a fish immediately! And then there days when you're the short timer, last guy to show up to the party, and boom, you hook up in a matter of minutes! Anyone that's fished for many years has been on both sides of that coin.
