Tried SB pier for an evening fishing session. First time doing this at the pier. Fished from 4:30 to 9:30. Started my session near the life guard tower. Strong winds and low tide. Caught a handful of Topsmelt for bait. Had one good hook up with a live smelt on a Carolina rig. Lost the fish after a short fight. No idea what it was. No further bites despite tossing out mussel, cured ghost shrimp (given to me by another angler), shrimp and anchovy.
At 7:30 I moved to the end of the pier. Winds subsided around 8:00 pm. I fished until 9:30. I caught 4 Thornback Rays, 2 Yellowfin croaker and 1 Halibut (short). All fish released, the fish went after mussel, squid, mackerel and anchovy.
The evening was very nice and a reasonable steady bite. I was planning to stay until the bite really slowed down. However, I decided to call it quits when a group of 5 individuals arrived. Two of them were fishing. The constant profanity and loud music ruined the peaceful evening.
As I was packing up. Two more fishermen arrived. They lowered a light into the water and set up 8 active fishing lines with 3 more rods/reels in their cart. Definitely time to leave!
I reported the violation to DFW. Pleasantly surprised that a dispatcher actually answered the phone and took down my information.
Looking forward to trying another evening session.
Did see a Sargo caught with shrimp, a Corbina caught with cut mackerel and a Round Ray caught on shrimp by other fishermen. Interesting variety.
A side note. The city has installed a tall flag pole with a light at the end of the pier. Looks great!
Good luck everyone.
