East Bay Halibut

Red Fish

This is an FYI and an FYI. One is to let people know that some fish are starting to show up (for the guy that was asking about reports).
Also, I want to address what 1 PFICER shared with me that compels me to speak on this platform.
To get to the meat of it, some folks with a 3rd rod in pursuit of halibut. If I see it, I will put an end to it namely because it is taking space from other anglers that need space on the rail. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

This was NOT at the place I caught my fish. People are actually very good about the rules there.

  1. 28” halibut for my first blood of the year. I used a three-way swivel rig as I figured it would keep my position a little better (and off other people’s line) with the current.
  2. I used an old beat up 5oz pyramid I had but around 3 to 4 oz sinker of your choice would be about right.
  3. 20# leader of Trilene/30# PP braid mainline with a 2/0 Owner Mutu light circle.
  4. I used an 8.5 slow action steelhead/salmon casting rod but honestly, a more fast action or perhaps light “boat rod” of 12-25 or 10-30 might have been better when the wind kicks up (because the slow action seemed a little floppy blowing in the wind).
  5. Abu 6500 casting is what I used (similar size if you are using spinning gear). Any 15 size casting reel would be good.
  6. Small Jack smelt or any size you can get under a foot.
  7. Last note: if you can’t castnet or jig up smelt or other live bait, bring some frozen anchovies or herring (you might get unexpected rays, but I’ve caught 3 foot hallies on frozen anchovy.) 4ED230E7-B04F-4EFF-9CA3-D242851FE134.jpeg

First of all, congrats on the fish. I wish you were with me yesterday because it's hard to constantly fight a losing one-man battle.
