Happy New Year Everyone! Been so busy with work that I haven't fished very much but things slowed down enough during the holidays that I got out there a couple days.
Fished Cabrillo mole on 12/26 from 7:15AM - 8PM. It was a decent day tainted by the rainy weather and the lack of any exceptional catches. We caught lots of fish but nothing larger. Mostly bottomed fished with a hi-lo rig and market shrimp and squid.
We caught tons of kelp bass and garibaldi and added some variety with a handfuls of blacksmith, blue perch and small sheephead. We caught a few tree fish, scorpion fish, a few lobsters and a couple rock wrasses, Biggest fish of the day was a 13.5" kelp bass. Notably absent was ocean white fish. I even looked for them casting a bit farther out in the late afternoon which in the past has been a reliable way to target them.
Was grateful to be out there even in the bad weather and very thankful to have fished the whole day without getting sick.
On January 2nd, I fished the Newport Jetty from 7AM to 12PM. Starting the morning before sunset by throwing a colt sniper. After a few casts I hooked up with a small barracuda. I then fished the bottom with a single dropped loop and market shrimp. I caught 3 black perch, 9 small kelp bass, 3 senorita wrasses, 1 rock wrasse and a 14" sheephead. It was nice to get an exciting fish after long day without that kind of catch at the mole.
