Dorado has been a talk of socall salt anglers lately. This tropical species usually call warm water south of the boarder their home but alongside bluefin tuna they have migrated into the back water of Los Angeles vicinity where a half day party boat can reach. Boats are quickly sold out and those half day ones fishing bottoms usually chasing these pretty fish hopping kelp paddy. Today, I managed to make time and find a spot to go out from 22nd street landing in San Pedro. Fishing was tough going. There are plenty of dorado swimming and jumping in our arm’s reach but they did not want to use their mouth much. So many boats out there. I managed only one bite but I successfully landed this nice looking three footer.

Folks saying they never heard of this size dorado runs in LA area.
To put a cherry on top, my nextra neighbor hooked on 6 feet blue marlin in his 15lb test tackle. I saw the marlin dance right in front of me. Tackle was grossly under rated and eventually it broke off the line. All in all, it was very unusual 3/4 day trip that I will remember for king time.

What was your set up & lure / bait?
15lb test flylining rig. The landing recommended to use 15-20lb mono rather than braids to avoid tangles. I respooled with izorline then topshot with 15lb seguer fluorocarbon. I used 1/0 Mustad circule hook. Recommendation was to use size 2-1 circle hook. Bait was sardines. We had a pretty big specimens 8-10 inches. Hence my hook choice.
