Short session at the breakwater to beat the 110 degree heat at home. Fished a rising tide. Caught 8 Salema, 1 short Calico Bass and my first Leopard shark - 25 inches. All fish released.
Caught all the fish on a high/low rig using different baits, mussel, anchovy, squid and shrimp. The Leopard hit on some cut shrimp.
I've tried for months to catch a Leopard shark using some proven baits like fresh mackerel, fresh White Croaker (Tomcod) or whole squid. Fished for them at Seal Beach and San Clemente.
Used large circle hooks with fish finder set up. Heavy mono or wire leaders and larger reels. No luck.
I catch my first Leopard with an Eagle Claw Baitholder #4 hook baited with a piece of shrimp, 12 lb. mono, on a Penn Wrath 4000 reel!
I love the unpredictable surprise element of fishing.
