The "croaker family" refers to the Sciaenidae family of fish, the drum family named for the drumming, croaking, or snoring sounds they produce by vibrating their swim bladders.

In California the family includes white croaker, queenfish, black croaker, corbina, shortfin corvina, and the white seabass.

In Mexico are found more varieties of croakers including the largest, the totuava (totoaba).

East coast croakers include the weakfishes (several varieties) and the red drum (channel bass) and black drum.
Other varieties are found throughout the world.
