Sargo are one of my favorite species of fish to catch. They are one of the best fighters on light tackle. Local anglers really love to catch Spotted Bay Bass, but I have caught both Sargo and Bay Bass on the same pole and tackle, I would rate the Sargo as the stronger fighter.
Sargo can be tough to catch due to they will rarely strike an artificial lure. You have to have the right bait. My top baits are fresh Mussel, Live Ghost Shrimp, and Live Blood Worms. I have not had much luck using market shrimp.
To improve your catch, use light tackle. I use 6 or 8 pound Mono and a light spinning outfit. I like to use a Carolina rig when catching Sargo. The key is to have your offering at the bottom of the water column.
One observation I noticed is Sargo seem to feed closer to shore in 4 to 10 feet of Water. For example a pier like Shelter Island pier in San Diego. Anglers are launching their baits away from shore. I cast towards shore and have caught all my Sargo in the shallow area of the pier.
