Hit Campbell Cove in Bodega Bay with a friend from work for the Outgoing to Low Tide and for a bit of the Incoming as well.......Fished Crab Snares with a combination of Squid, Salted Anchovies, and Wet Brined Herring ......... We ended up with 3 Keeper Dungies and a Keeper Red Rock Crab.....Weather was damn near perfect......Place was packed but people for the most part were quite polite......There were a LOT of people tossing crab snares........Tried to pump some shrimp and the flats there STINK.....I mean that sand smells BAD......Ghost Shrimp were few and far between......Not at all what I am used to there and to be honest I was SHOCKED that people were keeping clams dug out of that putrid mud. Saw and rescued two pretty big Moon Snails..They are protected North of the Golden Gate Bridge....and I mean they were tennis ball sized.......Not very common there unless it is a VERY low tide but a cool find none the less......3oz No Roll Sinkers wired to the bottom of the crab snares worked great and were holding bottom well enough to get the job done.

All in all.....A pretty damn good day........An some much needed time OUTSIDE........

Should have worn sunscreen though.......I never learn......

Nice! I’ve never had success with snares off of Pacifica pier, except for a single rock crab and a single short dungie. Always found there was too much current, even with 5 ounces of lead, and figured I shouldn’t go any over that amount of weight. Probably should go out more.

Is th pier opened already? Good Luck!
I SWEAR TO YOU.......THERE WERE PEOPLE ON THE SPUD POINT PIER LAST WEEKEND........But the closed sign was up again today............Damned annoying.......ended up fishing the cliff near Campbell Cove for one big female Rock Crab that was loaded with eggs that I splashed, and one big male that I kept......For as many lines that were in the water there......Crabbing was damn Slow

I fished an old 9' Daiwa Spinning Rod with an Okuma Eclipse Sz65 Reel and it did OK dragging in the snares.......But my ANCIENT Shimano Baitrunner 650 does a much better job.......I also fished an Old 7' Berkley casting rod with an ANCIENT and BEAT UP Abu 6500......The reel did not do well at all and really (pun intended) struggled bringing in this crab.......So I have to wonder......What are YOU GUYS using for tossing snares......I do know that the next time I go to this particular spot I am bringing my LONG rods........

I try to use a rod at least 10’ if Beach casting. I have some old big spinners of a 4500 Shimano and a 9500 Penn as the only large spin. But I won’t hesitate to use a conventional on a surf rod. The extra torque in these reels drags all that weight in with not too much trouble at all and casting a crabsnare is just light casting a weight by itself pretty much. Any of your Penns should work (like that 500 you won at the SR tackle show years ago).

I’m not sure if an abu 6500 would be heavy duty enough for crab snaring. From what I’ve found taking mine apart, the gear teeth seem pretty small and might wear fast in heavy duty use. They are reels designed back in the 60s or 70s for freshwater mono fishing. Your mileage might vary, but I don’t think a abu would work very well. I use a penn pursuit2 6000 with 40lb braid on a 10 foot ugly stick. Not sure if that’ll hold up either, as most people are using battles and fierces, but parts are cheap enough. Thinking of using a squidder if I can find a cheap rod.
