Black Sea Bass at Balboa Pier

Yesterday we witnessed a beautiful site when a large Black Sea bass swam by the pier not once but twice. It was first seen in the surf in clear water. I'd say it was about 7 to 9 feet long and weighed more than 200 pounds. It was large! A short time later it came back and swam the length of the pier and dissappeared to deep water. Everyone got to see it. Some thought they could catch it, and they quickly learned it was illegal to attempt it and succeed. Those fish have a life span of 75 to 100 years. In the past I have caught a 5 pounder off Balboa Pier and a 75 pounder off my boat south of San Clemente.

I've watched them swim under the Green Pleasure Pier in Catalina in crystal clear water, always a great sight.
