I visited Southern California last weekend to look at some colleges for my youngest daughter. We all went to the pier and beach on Saturday. I would’ve loved to go to The Redondo beach pier, but I knew on a Saturday afternoon it would be to crowded. I had seen some you tube videos of anglers catching Bonito and mackerel off the Belmont pier. So I went there. The Bonito and Mackerel didn’t show up that day. I only caught one mackerel. I used sabiki rigs and cast out micro jigs from 4-9:30 pm. My friend Paul who works for Shimano joined me and he caught one small queen fish. I saw a few individual mackerel and queen fish caught. And a couple anglers were fishing for sharks and rays. The caught a couple bat rays and a shovel nose shark. It was interesting to see the lights that anglers lowered into the water at night to attract fish. The anglers doing so , weren’t catching anything though. They did net some anchovies for bait. You could see larger fish swimming around, but they weren’t biting. I tried fishing near them in the light and wasn’t successful. It was still fun to get out and try a new pier that I had never fished in Southern California.
